What are Terracotta Warriors

What are Terracotta Warriors

The Terracotta Warriors are a group of almost 8,000 life-sized terracotta figures found at the Mausoleum of the First Chinese Emperor. The figures include both warriors and horses. They were discovered by local farmers in 1974 in Shaanxi, China.

The Terracotta Warriors form a terracotta army whose purpose is to protect the Emperor and his 300 wives and concubines who followed the Emperor to his tomb. The Terracotta Army was made to accompany the Emperor in his last journey and to help him rule the new empire in the afterlife. The construction of Emperors tomb and Terracotta Warriors began around 247 BC, that is - when the Emperor came to power and finished shortly before his death - 210 BC. So it took 37 years and 700,000 workers and craftsmen to accomplish this work. That is why the Terracotta Army is usually refered to as the 8th Wonder of the World.

The Terracotta Warriors Museum in Dorchester, UK has a spectacular exhibition which brings together all the wonder of the discovery of the many treasures of Quin She Huang Di, the first Emperor of China.

The Exhibition features a spectacular group of these warriors which have been special created in China by the conservation technicians who preserve and restore the warriors after excavation.

Terracotta

Terracotta is a type of ceramic. Its name derives from the Italian term meaning "baked earth". Items made of terracotta are loved for their natural, earthy colour. Terracotta is widely used for sculpture and pottery, as well producing tiles, bricks and shingles. Terracotta is a very old material, it has been used by humankind for thousands of years.

The most popular terracotta items are Terracotta Warriors. Mainly thanks to the increasing interest in Chinese history, terracotta is enjoying its rebirth - decorative and houshold items made of terracotta are getting more and more popular these days.
